Troy Weights - Current Usage

There have been many incarnations of Troy weights used over the course of history but today the only systems still in use are the British Imperial Troy weights and the US Customary troy weights. The only difference between the two systems is that the troy pound was abolished in the British Imperial system, it is still part of the US Customary system however it is rarely used.

Troy weights are used for measuring gunpowder (grains) and precious metals, such as gold and silver (troy ounces). Some gemstones are also mesured using the troy system though the carat is now more common.

The Metric Carat And Its Relationship To Troy Weights

The carat was defined as 200 milligrams (mg) in 1907 and this definition is sometimes known as the metric carat. The metric carat is one of the few metric weight units to have been adopted in the United States, where it was adopted in 1913 and in the UK (adopted 1914) prior to full metrication. It has now almost completely replaced the use of troy weights for weighing gems.
